Donald Ray Koonce, a beloved husband, dedicated father, cherished grandfather, passed away on July 20, 2026, in Conway, Arkansas. Born on February 3, 1954, in Morrilton, Arkansas to his father Doyne Elmer Koonce and mother Mary Ellen Koonce.
Don radiated warmth and kindness to all who knew him. He was a man deeply rooted in his values, and he lived those values through his unwavering love for his family, his generosity, and the genuine way he cared for others. Whether offering a listening ear, sharing a laugh, or simply being present when someone needed him, he had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, heard, and loved. His quiet strength, compassion, and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Don is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Sherry Koonce, whom he admired deeply and was endlessly proud of. He never missed an opportunity to talk about the things she was doing or the adventures they shared together. He leaves behind a legacy through his children: Jennifer Koonce, Stephanie Haile (Billy), Jason Koonce (Brindy), and Lindsey Guerrero (Gustavo). The joy of his life continued in his grandchildren: Ashlyn Goff (Justin), Austin Koonce (Maddie), Caleb Kervin, Presley, Nathan, Noah & Oliver Haile, Adysen, Gustavo, Ella & Claire Guerrero, Kinley & Brayson Koonce, Amelia Goff. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and Don treasured the time he spent with them, always ready to offer a guiding word, a smile, or a shared laugh.
Don is also mourned by his brother, Billy Koonce (Judy); his sisters, Sue Lloyd and Sharon Jackson (Tim); and his extended family, including Ray and Joyce Berken, Rick and Lisa Heffington, Debbie and Jim Seidel, Brad Berken, Scott and Michelle Berken. The connections he forged extended beyond immediate family, reaching into a large and loving circle of friends and relatives.
He joins in eternal rest his parents and his brother, Bobby Koonce, whose memories live on in the hearts of those who remain.
Don found joy in life’s simple moments. He loved singing karaoke, spending time at the movies, and gathering around the table for card games with family and friends. If you were nearby while he was working in his yard, chances are you heard him long before you saw him, whistling as he rode his lawnmower- a sound that became familiar and comforting to those who loved him. Above all else, Don's love for his family and grandchildren was the guiding force of his life, and he never missed an opportunity to express how much they meant to him. His love was constant, generous and unconditional, and it is a legacy that will live on in each of us.
Those wishing to pay their respects may join the visitation on July 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Friendship Baptist Church, 767 Rocky Point Rd, Conway, AR 72173.
